As part of Catholic Schools Week we invited our Grandparents back to school for the morning. Combining Science Week we decided that what our Grandparents would really love to do most, would be to get messy. We carried out an investigation to see the effect of blubber, a layer of fat animals in polar regions have on body temperature. This involved timing how long we could keep our hand in the cold, icy water without anything additional, then covering our hand with a layer of butter, which would act as the blubber and timing a second time. We found that most people were able to keep their hand in the cold water for longer with the layer of blubber, fat. Some of our Grandparents even got involved themselves!
